Arsene Wenger is an Arsenal legend, but here at the Transfer Tavern we think his stubborn approach to team selection could severely damage this potentially successful season for the Gunners.

Arsenal are currently sitting comfortably in the top 4 and showing real signs of mounting a serious challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners face West Brom and Crystal Palace over the Christmas period and Arsene Wenger is under pressure to secure maximum points.

Arsenal’s recent loss at Everton highlighted some frailties in defence, especially with the missing Shkodran Mustafi, and upfront the team lacked confidence; they created many opportunities but were unable to make them count.

Arsene Wenger is having to contend with an injury crisis meaning his options are limited; Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Debuchy are all out and Per Mertersacker and Danny Welbeck are way short of match fitness.

The Emirates faithful in the Tavern are a demanding lot and some believe Arsene Wenger is relying too heavily on certain players who are not performing and that he needs to be more assertive with his selections.

Here in the Transfer Tavern, we think it’s time that Arsene Wenger dropped these two players and got their title campaign back on track.

MESUT OZIL

The German international could benefit from a rest.

Mesut Ozil has been outstanding this season. In recent games, however, the creative spark has dimmed and he has been less effective on the pitch.

Some in the Tavern believe it’s time for Arsene Wenger to give the German international a spell on the bench and allow a rising star like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the chance to build on his recent excellent form.

FRANCIS COQUELIN

The Frenchman lacks discipline and commits too many fouls.

The Arsenal fans in the Tavern have been screaming out for a new midfield enforcer since the days of Patrick Viera and Emmanuel Petit, sadly Francis Coquelin is not currently the answer.

Granit Xhaka is the power house in Arsenal’s midfield and he needs a ball player alongside him. However, with Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey out Wenger must look to adjust the system or trust Mohamed Elneny to step up.
