There was a lot of nervous anticipation in the lead-up to the game, but those fears were immediately calmed by Pedro, who produced a stunning strike just a few minutes into the game.
It was a typical industrial-like performance from the Spaniard, who has become increasingly vital to Antonio Conte as the Italian continues to impress at the helm.
His arrival went under the radar somewhat, but under Conte he has really turned into a vital component of the Chelsea attack, and Jeremy Wilson of the Telegraph has recently been discussing his contributions at length, and he is mightily impressed.
Wilson has described Pedro as the “on-field embodiment of Conte’s relentless intensity”, before delving deeper into his role within the team.
He writes: “Pedro is one of the few Chelsea players who even Conte rarely berates, quite simply because he has usually already sprinted back and pressurised his opponent before there has been time to start hollering”.
Antonio Conte is a manager that demands 110% out of every single one of his players, and Pedro is certainly a player that always delivers that. He doesn’t stop running, and as Wilson notes, whilst certain attackers may be more concerned with the offensive side of the game – Pedro’s focus is in each half in equal measure.
He enjoyed a fantastic campaign last term, and his start to this season suggests that his fine form is going to continue.
Landlord’s Verdict
Pedro is one of the Premier League’s best players, but he is often overshadowed by the likes of Eden Hazard and, formerly, Diego Costa.
This season, though, he appears to finally be getting the credit that he deserves.
His hard work and offensive pedigree has made him indispensable for Antonio Conte, and whilst Willian doesn’t deserve to be on the bench, Pedro’s fine form leaves Conte little choice.
