Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern may be trying to forget their side’s Champions League defeat, but it’s fair to say that Loris Karius’ mistakes will live long in the memory for most.
It’s hard to say that the German’s errors cost Liverpool the game, because, as we saw from Gareth Bale’s masterstroke, Real Madrid have the quality to demolish any team in a matter of seconds, but it’s certainly clear that the German’s performance was problematic.
This summer, then, signing a replacement for him is likely to be a priority for the Reds, but it doesn’t look as though that process is going to be easy. According to the Guardian, one of Liverpool’s targets, Alisson of AS Roma, will cost as much as £79m – with the Italian side clearly hesitant to let their star goalkeeper leave.
It is, of course, worth noting that Liverpool signed Mohamed Salah from the Italians last summer, and though he wasn’t cheap, his fine form has made that deal looked like a steal. Whether that’s a reason for their demands is unclear, but it is worth noting.
For Liverpool, then, a quick solution isn’t looking likely, especially given that the Reds will be eager to ensure that they get the best possible deal out of AS Roma.
It is, of course, not as easy as that, but Karius’ display has clearly demanded a sense of urgency from them.
Take a look at what they’ve had to say below…
