Key Sunderland figure unsure on future as contract approaches expiry – report

John O'Shea

Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern will want to quickly forget about their disastrous season in the Championship and will hope they dig themselves out of a rut next season.

The Black Cats have been relegated to League One, however, they are now under the process of a takeover, and the locals in the bar will be hoping it can only be a good thing for the future of the club. Chris Coleman was recently shown the door at the Stadium of Light and one of his stars has admitted he does not know whether his future remains in the north-east.

John O’Shea has revealed to the Off the Ball podcast that he would like to extend his playing days with the club, however, he has not been informed whether he will be offered a new deal as his contract approaches its expiry date.

“We just wait and see, I’m out of contract at the end of June. When I signed last season I thought we’ll see how the body copes. I played more than I thought but we’ll wait and see,” he told the Off the Ball podcast.

“The last couple of years have not gone to plan for the club and that goes for the players as well, it has been hugely frustrating.

“You know yourself Kevin [Kilbane] what a fantastic club it is and fingers crossed it gets sorted as soon as possible with the new owner and a new manager because we showed at stages last season, not enough obviously, that we could get results.”

Landlord’s Verdict

The Sunderland fans in the Tavern will be extremely disappointed with the way their club has been handled in the past and will be hoping the new ownership can finally put an end to all the drama which has plagued the club’s recent memory.

The locals in the bar are likely to want O’Shea to stay at the Stadium of Light and will be hoping the club can strike a deal with him, however, some of the punters will feel it could be time for the academy player’s to get a chance to impress in the first-team.
