When you ask the Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern what their favourite squad has been in recent seasons – you get one of two answers.
First, you get those saying the side with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge up top causing havoc as the favourite, as they came so close to winning the Premier League title.
Or, you get the class of 2008/09 that also went close to winning the league and was a far more defensively sound unit that the 2013/14 incarnation. That team only lost two games all season and still didn’t win the league – with the centre of it a midfield trio of Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano and Steven Gerrard.
Three absolutely world class players at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield, small wonder they’ve often struggled since losing them then.
The central midfield positions are obviously key to winning the title and as the Reds look to lift the trophy under Jurgen Klopp this season, our landlord reckons they should go for these two central players in January to help them do just that…

Without wanting to sound too premature this season, Dortmund do not look the side they used to be in the Bundesliga.
It is still early days, yes, but they have struggled more than they would have imagined so far this season and find themselves behind Bayern Munich, FC Koln, Red Bull Leipzig and Hertha Berlin already.
They’ll feel they can turn it round but if they haven’t by January the Reds should act to sign up their most promising midfielder – Julian Weigl.
An impressive, commanding and creative midfielder – Weigl would be perfect.

If you can’t agree with Dortmund struggling then that’s perhaps fair – but you have to say Inter Milan are certainly in a rut.
The Serie A side are closing in on the self-destruct button with their fans absolutely hating captain Mauro Icardi whilst, despite beating Juventus, their league form is also poor – forcing them into the bottom half.
Kondogbia would surely be tempted by a move to the Reds, then, and he’d add some much-needed power in the centre.
He is a powerful defensive midfielder, that has the presence to transform the middle-of-the-park for any side. He has long been touted with a big money move in the Tavern – and January could be the perfect time to make a deal happen.
