After hiring former Southampton manager Ronald Koeman and arming him with a proverbial war chest, new doors were opening everywhere with the players Everton could attract.
No longer would they have to scrape by on loan signings or cut-price deals for reserve players – now they could compete with the big boys.
So far the Toffees have been relatively restrained with their newly-found financial muscle, with £25m on Crystal Palace winger Yannick Bolasie their only big-money signing.
Apart from the DR Congo winger Koeman has been relatively frugal in his funds, spending just over £20m combined on Ashley Williams, Idrissa Gana Gueye and the experienced Maarten Stekelenburg.
All three have made superb starts at Goodison Park, with the latter recently drawing the plaudits for two penalty stops and a series of fine saves against leaders Manchester City.
Koeman clearly has an eye for a good player but won’t have failed to notice how well Brazilian players like Roberto Firmino and Phillipe Coutinho are doing on the other side of the Mersey river.

EDERSON

The first man on our list is Ederson of Benfica.
While Maarten Stekelenburg has had a good start to his Toffees career, Koeman will acknowledge the need for some competition and an eventual replacement for the 34-year-old.
23-year-old Ederson may be the perfect fit having just started to break into the Benfica first team.
The youngster has managed three clean sheets in his four appearances this season, including a superb display to shut out Dynamo Kiev in their 2-0 win in midweek.
DORIA
Once touted as a huge talent, Doria has failed to establish himself since a move to Marseilles in 2014.
Upon moving to the French side, the 21-year-old has played in their reserves before being shipped out on loan spells to Brazil and Spain, with Sao Paulo and Granada respectively.
Although Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka are still solid players, they are both into their thirties and may soon struggle to cope with the rigours of Premier League football.
In Doria, Everton would have a youthful option, and who better than Koeman to coach the defensive side of his game?
LUCAS MOURA
This one might be a bit of a stretch but if Everton want to compete with the top four, they have to be ambitious.
Lucas Moura has been on fine form for Paris Saint-Germain this season, bagging five goals in nine games.
Despite his upshot in form, his side are struggling in the league more than usual and are being threatened by the likes of Nice and Monaco.
With Laurent Blanc and Zlatan Ibrahimovic gone, Les Parisians are going through something of a transition.
Should other star players decide to leave then the Brazilian would present a huge upgrade on Kevin Mirallas and Gerard Deulofeu.
