Everton had started this season extremely well indeed but their 5-0 humiliation has left things sounding a little quieter in the Toffees corner of the Tavern in recent days!
As we said, the loss to Chelsea was one of the heaviest suffered by the Toffees in years, and it really showed how much improvement will be needed if Koeman’s side are to keep pace at the top of the table all season.
But despite an extremely dodgy one-off result, we’ve seen some very good things from the Toffees this season, including the continued good form from the likes of Romelu Lukaku and summer signing Idrissa Gueye.
Still, it’s clear that if Everton have any hope of sneaking into the top-four come the end of the campaign, they’re going to need some investment in January.
And after Portugal’s stunning Euro 2016 victory, we want to see whether anyone from the country might make it into this current Everton crop.
So with that in mind, here are TWO Portuguese players Koeman should look to sign in January…
Goncalo Guedes
Not the most household of names to the masses, but young winger Goncalo Guedes is a man that is making real progress in the Liga NOS in Portugal.
He’s a 19-year-old wide man who plays for Benfica and just last season, he broke the record of the youngest Portuguese player to have ever scored in the Champions League group stage, a 2-1 away win against Atletico Madrid.
He’s got frighteningly quick pace, quick feet and looks like the sort of player that could really add some muscle to the Everton flank.
He’s one to keep an eye on for sure.
Daniel Carrico
With Phil Jagielka now 34-years-old, a thought at the forefront of Koeman’s mind will be bringing in a solid centre-back to replace him when his performances do begin to inevitably dip.
And a cracking Portuguese defender doing extremely well at club level right now is Daniel Carrico, who plays his football with Sevilla.
At 28-years-old, he’s got plenty of time left in him and has been a massive part of the squad this campaign.
He’s got a lot to prove after missing a lot of the 2015-2016 campaign due to a tendon injury and he’d make a fantastic signing for the Toffees.
