The Blues face a tough test at Stamford Bridge against Qarabag, in a game that they will be expected to win. One thing that the visitors have in their favour, though, is that they are an unknown quantity, and so the Blues may not know exactly what to expect.
Still, there will be no excuses when the music sounds and that whistle is blown, with a dominant victory the only acceptable result.
In the lead-up to the game, Frank Lampard has been discussing the Blues for the Evening Standard, and whilst the club may not be the favourites for the competition, the former Chelsea ace is backing them for success.
He said: “When I look at the other English teams in the Champions League, some of them will struggle at the back, whereas Chelsea have a great base”.
He added: “The structure that Conte set up last season with three at the back clearly works as they won the title and they have added a few players in midfield”.
It’s true that last season Chelsea’s defence was the most potent string in Conte’s bow. The trio of Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta was often unstoppable, and that’s a trend that has continued this term, albeit with Antonio Rudiger in place of Gary Cahill.
It’s a much-changed team compared to when Lampard represented the Blues, but the Englishman appears well versed in everything Chelsea – and his word is gospel amongst fans. In truth, most of them in the pub are feeling pretty confident now.
Landlord’s Verdict
Chelsea’s defence is undoubtedly a highlight of their team.
The aforementioned trio played nearly every game last season, and that partnership is so important.
The likes of Man Utd, Liverpool and Man City, meanwhile, have changed things up this season – and in the case of Liverpool in particular, have looked shaky at the back. Man City are in a transitional period at the back, whilst Man Utd are yet to see the best out of the likes of Victor Lindelof.
Even Tottenham have looked shaky defensively, with both Danny Rose (injured) and Kyle Walker (sold) currently out of the team.
All of the sides have potential, but it is Chelsea’s defence that will stand them in good stead this season.
