Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are starting to get anxious at the lack of transfer activity at Stamford Bridge with the future of Antonio Conte still in doubt.
The Blues endured a disappointing 2017/18 season, finishing in fifth in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League football. Although they ended the season with a trophy – defeating Manchester United in the final of the FA Cup – Antonio Conte’s job as manager is surely under threat. Owner Roman Abramovich will be disappointed with the season results and could be set to wield his managerial axe yet again. Former Napoli boss, Maurizio Sarri, is the favourite to take over.
Regardless of who is in charge, our punters are desperate to see some new faces arrive at Stamford Bridge. A new centre-back could be high on the shortlist of whichever manager is in control. David Luiz has been heavily linked with an exit, and Gary Cahill is approaching the end of his career. Youngster Andreas Christensen made a great start to life at Chelsea but has been inconsistent at times.
One man Chelsea could target is Juventus defender – Daniele Rugani. Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the Italian has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Serie A despite his young age. He made 22 appearances in the Serie A as Juve were crowned Italian champions yet again.
The 23-year-old is a terrific defender and an excellent passer of the ball. He completed 90% of his passes in the Serie A last season (WhoScored). Rugani would fit perfectly into the Chelsea side alongside Antonio Rudiger. The Blues would have their defence sorted for the next decade.
Chelsea fans, thoughts?
