Newcastle have decided not to exercise the extension option in Callum Wilson’s contract and have instead entered negotiations on a fresh deal that is more incentive based. The player’s current deal runs out at the end of June and he will now consider his future as reported by David Ornstein of the Athletic.

Wilson is one of Newcastle’s longest serving players, having made 129 appearances since joining from Bournemouth in 2020. He lead the line for the better part of 3 seasons, scoring 18 Premier League goals in the 2022/23 season as Newcastle secured a return to the Champions League.

He has however played second fiddle to Alexander Isak over the past two seasons, with the Swede in prolific form in front of goal. Wilson was limited to only 18 league appearances this season, failing to score in any of them.

He appeared emotional following Newcastle’s 1-0 home defeat to Everton on Sunday, a result that fortunately did not deny the Magpies a Champions League place. He was a second half substitute as Newcastle attempted to claw themselves back into the match.

Wilson considering his future

Eddie Howe said in his post-game news conference that the club hope to keep the player who has remains a popular figure around the club.

“Let’s wait and see, we’re going to sit down and talk with his representatives,” he said. “What I can say is Callum is and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle. Someone who epitomizes the spirit that’s got us to where we are.

“He is really professional and brave. I mean to come here and be the No 9 in the manner and the moment that he did in the club’s history, it was a difficult moment, the club needed hope and Callum gave them hope and led the line with the responsibility and the pressure that that role brings unbelievably well.”

“He brings a positivity to the group, he’s a leader within the changing room, he’s just been incredible. Let’s just wait and see what happens. It was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters, there’s still so much respect there between the two.”

Now 33, Wilson will consider his next move as likely his last. The player himself has described this season as one of his worst, with TalkSport reporting that newly promoted Premier League club Leeds is leading the line for his signature.

Newcastle is keen to keep the player as a strong voice in the locker room, but will allow him to leave if he is offered consistent first team football.
