Leeds fans on Twitter reminisce over Dominic Matteo

Soe players really connect with the fans of a club when they arrive, and Dominic Matteo is a brilliant example of that when he was at Leeds. The Scottish left-back will always be looked at fondly by The Whites and they’ve been taking to Twitter to reminisce over his goal at The San Siro during their run to the 2001 Champions League semi-finals.

The 44-year-old left-back spent just four seasons at Elland Road, but the fans all feel like it was a bit longer than that. Having signed for the club in the summer of 2000 after failing to become a regular starter at Liverpool, Matteo made an instant impact becoming a hero just months into his Leeds career when he powered home a header at The San Siro in a 1-1 draw with AC Milan, a result that helped them through the group stages at the expense of Barcelona.

That season was magical for Leeds United fans. They’ve got some very fond memories of that famous Champions League run and whilst it all came to a bitter end at the hands of Valencia, it won’t stop the fans from remembering the famous nights they had against the likes of Lazio, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Deportivo on their way to the semi-finals. At the heart of it all was Dominic Matteo, though, and whenever the fans get the chance to, they’ll look back on the Scottish defender as one of their own.
