Lots of Leeds United fans reacted to a tweet from the Whites’ official account wishing club legend Mick Jones a happy birthday.
After arriving at Elland Road from Sheffield United for £135k all the way back in 1967, Jones went on to reach double figures in all of his seven seasons in the Peacocks’ first team, finishing as the top goalscorer in Don Revie’s title-winning campaigns.
Together with Allan Clarke, who is affectionately known as the Sniffer, he formed one of the most formidable strike partnerships in the club’s history to-date. The forward famously set up Clarke for the decisive goal against Arsenal in the 1972 FA Cup final, although he dislocated his shoulder in the dying moments of the game, and was helped up the steps at Wembley to receive the coveted medal (The Times).

The former England international also won 3 caps for his country before a recurring injury problem led to his premature retirement from all forms of football at the age of 30 in the summer of 1975.
Obviously, the “great foil” is still held in high regard by a whole number of supporters, as many took to Twitter to wax lyrical about his incredible career. One fan commented he is “vastly underrated,” while another dubbed Jones an “unsung hero.”
