Leeds United are currently without Diego Llorente as he recovers from another injury and Kevin Phillips believes one more hamstring issue could sideline the defender for the remainder of the season.
What Phillips had to say about Llorente
Phillips felt sorry for the Spaniard when he spoke to Football Insider: “When you have had so many injuries you are just waiting for it to go again. The crucial thing is that you do not rush him back. If his hamstring goes again, that could be him done for the season. Marcelo Bielsa has got a big decision to make. You have to be careful.
“I feel sorry for Llorente. He will be devastated. He probably thinks that every time he goes on the pitch he is going to get injured. It is amazing that he comes through an Under-23s game fine and then he goes and gets injured 10 minutes into a Premier League match. I would certainly look at the training routine.”
Bielsa should heed these comments
Despite the club already having injury issues at the back with Robin Koch currently recovering from surgery, Phillips is right when he says Leeds should not rush Llorente back.
The summer signing has had loads of injury struggles since he signed for the club, but shone in one of his two Premier League appearances for Leeds (SofaScore). The ‘fantastic’ Spaniard only featuring twice since his arrival will definitely be a worry for Marcelo Bielsa, even more so because he played so well when he got the chance, but rushing him back could be catastrophic.
Hamstring issues are incredibly hard to manage, but with Leeds eleventh in the division (SofaScore) and looking like they will comfortably stay in the top flight, there is no need for Bielsa to force the issue for a player who could be crucial looking beyond this season.
