Leeds United: Noel Whelan believes Tyler Roberts doesn’t have a future at the club

Leeds United: Noel Whelan believes Tyler Roberts doesn’t have a future at the club - Leeds United News

Ever since Leeds United have been back in the Premier League, it has been a struggle for Tyler Roberts to get regular playing time, and former player Noel Whelan has been discussing his future at Elland Road.

What Whelan had to say about Roberts

Speaking to Football Insider about the attacker, Whelan said: “While he is young I do not think he is of the required level. His fitness levels did not look great the other day either (vs Wolves). He did nothing after 20 minutes. That is a substitute’s performance. We need a player who can play 90 minutes.

“Roberts has been injured too often. He was even injured when we signed him. Is he good enough? In my opinion he isn’t. I would love him to go out there and prove me wrong because I want everyone to succeed. I need him to show me more. He needs to show more fight and desire. I just do not see that.”

Should Leeds and Roberts part ways?

It is definitely worth questioning whether the Championship is more suited to Roberts as he has only played 525 minutes of league football this season (Transfermarkt). The fact he has been seen on the pitch so rarely explains why people like Whelan don’t believe he is good enough.

Clearly Roberts’ recent form has forced Whelan to change his mind, as just a couple of months ago he spoke about how Roberts’ pace poses a “different” threat and makes him a “fantastic” option off the bench.

He is definitely rated by Marcelo Bielsa – the Argentinian was questioned about Roberts’ role at the club recently, saying (via Leeds Live): “When Tyler has been available he’s always been in the 18-man squad. I don’t ignore there’s a 20-man squad, but I say 18 because it reiterates his importance.”

Therefore it might be better for the club to keep hold of the 22 year-old, as he can improve best under Bielsa. He also provides some important squad depth during the congested seasons clubs now find themselves in, which has seen plenty of players across the league miss periods of time.

In other news, Leeds are interested in a European prospect!
