Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been in the market to add a number eight-style midfielder to their squad, after they pulled out on a deal to sign Michael Cuisance from Bayern Munich. The Whites have also seen a £15 million offer rejected by Norwich City for Todd Cantwell, as per Football Insider.
Leeds facing race against time to secure Sibley move
The Whites are now thought to be turning their focus towards Sibley, with Leeds thought to be very impressed with the 19-year-old’s progression at Derby over the last few months. However, Leeds are yet to submit a formal offer for the versatile midfielder, as per Football Insider.
Sibley is believed to be an integral part of Derby’s plans for the campaign. The 19-year-old offers Derby the flexibility of being able to play in the number eight position or further forwards as more of an attacking midfielder.
After seeing their offer for Norwich’s Cantwell rejected, with the Canaries holding out for nearer £20 million, The Whites could now make a late move to test Derby’s resolve over Sibley, who has started two of their opening four Championship matches.
Sibley the sort of talent Bielsa could really develop
Bielsa has proven to be very capable of developing some of Leeds’ promising younger players during his time in charge at Elland Road, as well as developing the likes of Jack Harrison and Ben White during their loan spells with the Whites.
Sibley has already shown that he has real potential, having registered five goals and two assists in just 11 appearances in the Championship last term. The 19-year-old’s underlying numbers were also very impressive averaging 1.6 shots and an 81% passing accuracy per game (via Sofascore).
