Mauricio Pochettino’s side are now a whopping 13 points adrift of league-leaders Manchester City after recording just 1 win in their last 4 Premier League matches. Given City’s formidable form this season, Tottenham look well and truly out of the title-race already with 25 matches still to play.
And Tottenham’s credentials could be set to take another decisive blow in the January transfer window, as reports in Spanish media outlet DonBalon have linked their Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen with a move to FC Barcelona in the mid-season window.
Although Pochettino will be working in conjunction with Daniel Levy to ensure that Eriksen remains at the club, Tottenham must be prepared to land a marquee signing in the event that Eriksen swaps North-London for Catalonia.
With that being said, the Tottenham hierarchy should look no further than pursuing a sensational swoop to bring Gareth Bale back to the club.
In footballing terms, the return of Bale would be on par with the return of the Messiah.
Bale would not represent a like for like replacement for Eriksen by any stretch, but the impact of the Welshman’s return would be revolutionary for the club’s optimism and ambition.
The Lilywhites’ former superstar would bring his frightening left-boot, blistering pace and most importantly, star quality back to the club where his illustrious career took off.
Tottenham have plenty of midfield options to cope with the loss of Eriksen, however, the mood around the club would turn bleak following his departure.
But if Pochettino is able to lure Bale away from Madrid, then the pain felt across the club following the loss of Eriksen would quickly become a distant memory in the midst of the new-found optimism that would emerge in tandem with Bale’s arrival.
