Arsenal fans are unbearable at the best of times but the ones in the Football Transfer Tavern would have danced and partied for months if this next rumour is true.
Because according to Metro, Lionel Messi was reportedly interested in a move to Arsenal before he signed a new contract with Barcelona.
The Argentine superstar, who finally proved he can be a hit on the World Cup stage this summer, eventually agreed a contract extension just two months ago.
But apparently Messi was seriously considering a switch to the Emirates Stadium before sorting out an arrangement to stay at the Camp Nou.
Reports suggest that Messi had spoken to then Barcelona team-mate and friend Cesc Fabregas about his time in North London.
His agent was reportedly sent to discuss whether a deal could be done with the Gunners but that is when Barcelona stepped up their attempts to secure the long-term future of the world’s best footballer.
Before joining Barcelona as a youngster, Messi had the chance to join Arsenal and it is thought that the Argentine is a huge admirer of Arsene Wenger and his philosophies as a coach.
