Liverpool: Adrian urged to leave after Caoimhin Kelleher emergence

Liverpool's-Adrian

Adrian has been urged to leave Liverpool by Darren Bent after the emergence of rival goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Spurs, Aston Villa and Sunderland striker was full of praise for the latter’s display versus Ajax in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, and said that he may well have replaced Adrian as Jurgen Klopp’s number two ‘keeper behind Alisson, meaning that the former West Ham United shot stopper should look to find a new club, whether that would be in the January transfer window or in the summer:

“Listen, after his performance as well, I don’t think Adrian is going to get anywhere near it because we’ve seen Adrian, on a few occasions, make mistakes that has cost his team points and goals.

“I go back to the Everton game when he gave the ball away and they scored so we’ve seen him make big, big mistakes that cost goals, where Kelleher came in now and he played really, really well – made big saves, good with his feet, Jurgen Klopp gave him a big hug at the end and I think he’s now jumped ahead of Adrian.

“Adrian has got to start looking for places to go and play, because obviously, we all know number one is going to be Allison, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world and there’s an argument to be made that he is the best.

“With Kelleher just coming now and playing as well as he did, I can’t see, unless there’s another injury, I can’t see how Adrian’s ever going to play. If one or two of those goalkeepers are fit, I can’t ever see how Adrian’s going to get any game time.

“That performance was so assured, so confident, saves, distribution, everything that I can’t see him getting dropped now until Alisson comes back.”

All gone downhill for Adrian since his debut

It has all gone downhill for Adrian since his debut for Jurgen Klopp’s team, which was when the Reds won 5-4 on penalties over Chelsea in the 2019/20 UEFA Super Cup.

The 33-year old was even described as a ‘hero’ that night by Jordan Henderson, as he also received high praise from his manager (The Guardian).

However, he has not been able to cut silly errors out of his game, making two that led to goals from nine starts in the Premier League last term, as well as another mistake that led to a goal this season in the top flight.

With the emergence of Kelleher, perhaps the Spaniard does need to move away from Anfield in order to play regular first team football.
