Liverpool may have “all eggs in one basket” over their Jude Bellingham pursuit, according to Josh Williams.
The Lowdown: Bellingham pursuit
Bellingham is almost certainly going to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer considering all the interest in his signature, with Liverpool up the front of the queue to sign him.
Sky Sports previously reported last month that the Reds remain the favourites to sign the 19-year-old midfielder amid fierce competition from Real Madrid and Premier League rivals Manchester City.
Liverpool’s quiet January window saw only the £37m arrival of forward Cody Gakpo come to fruition with no move for a centre-midfielder happening, leaving the door open for a swoop for Bellingham in four months’ time.
The Latest: Williams’ concerns
Speaking on the Blood Red podcast, Williams shared his concerns that Liverpool have become too engulfed in the chase for Bellingham and potentially leave them ignoring other deals, saying:
“I just kind of hope that Liverpool haven’t moved because the summer is kind of sorted – that’s my hope. And if that’s not the case, and if it’s still a tightrope with Bellingham, then I’m concerned, because it is kind of getting to a point where it’s a bit like we’re kind of floating in the middle of the sea on a raft.
“Jude Bellingham was kind of like the only saviour for us and it feels a little bit like all eggs in one basket, and I’ve said that a few times.”
The Verdict: Must be careful
Liverpool will have to be cautious with Williams’ concerns a real possibility given Bellingham’s notoriety and the struggling position that the Reds find themselves in at the moment, sitting in ninth place and ten points off a Champions League spot.
Given Liverpool’s success over previous years, missing out on the elite European competition this season may not carry the most worrying repercussions but with the possible outcome they don’t boast Champions League football over other suitors for the Englishman, that could prove damaging.
The Reds are facing a busy summer window with six first-team players out of contract at the end of the season, including four central-midfielders (via Transfermarkt), the need for Bellingham is definitely a priority, but the arrival of a number of options is crucial and with Bellingham’s price tag of £130m (Daily Mail), Jurgen Klopp may be forced to choose quality or quantity.
