Steven Gerrard missed a second-half penalty which would have brought the game to 3-2 and possibly gave the Reds a chance to go on and level the proceedings.
His run-up was not right and looked to lack confidence as he blazed his spot-kick over the bar.
Manager Roy Hodgson was sacked a few days following the loss, with legend Kenny Dalglish replacing him before their FA Cup tie against Manchester United.
Fans believe to this day that captain fantastic intentionally missed the penalty to dig his club out of the mire and set a new positive trajectory for his beloved team.
Supporters were thankful for the former skipper for his actions during the game and made their feelings clear on social media.
