Liverpool: Fans criticise Lothar Matthaus comments about Thiago Alcantara

Many Liverpool fans took exception to comments that former Bayern Munich icon Lothar Matthaus made about midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

The 29-year-old made the move to Anfield from the Bavarian giants in the summer but has spent most of his time on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury against Everton.

L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) suggested that his time on Merseyside appears to be a failure and Matthaus joined the train of criticism, telling Sky Germany that he should return to Germany because “he’s not getting on at Liverpool.”

He said (as quoted by Sport Witness): “How about Bayern bring Thiago back to Munich? He’s not getting on at Liverpool and in Munich he is missed by Hansi Flick and the fans.

Anyone who says goodbye to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge so emotionally, the door is certainly never completely closed.”

Since October, Thiago has started just 10 games in all competitions, with Tuesday night’s 2-0 win against RB Leipzig being his first appearances in the Champions League for the Reds (Whoscored).

Unsurprisingly, supporters were not impressed with Matthaus’ comments, not taking his injuries into account this season and his lack of game time. A couple of them insisted Thiago is remaining put at Anfield, while another two suggested that his comments are disrespectful.
