Liverpool fans heaped praise on Aston Villa goalkeeper Pepe Reina despite his side losing 3-2 to Tottenham on Sunday.
The Spaniard was unlucky to be on the losing side after making a series of saves to deny the north London side on multiple occasions during the 90 minutes. Some were relatively routine, others were impressive (as noted by the Birmingham Mail), but the Villans could have lost heavily had it not been for the contributions of the former Reds shot-stopper.
Reina, who is currently on loan at Villa Park from AC Milan, spent six seasons at Anfield under the tenures of Rafael Benitez and Brendan Rodgers where he won the FA Cup and the Carling Cup. He made 394 appearances and kept 177 clean sheets with over 35,000 minutes played for the Merseyside club, as per TransferMarkt. Supporters reflected on his time at Anfield and made their feelings clear about him on social media. One fan said that the club let him go far too soon and that signing Simon Mignolet was not an improvement.

Pepe Reina has been great today.
On this evidence we let him go far too early.
Don’t think any of our pre- Alisson keepers were an improvement. #AVLTOT #Reina #LFC

We would have won the league in 13-14 with him in the net. He really shouldn’t have been let go until we signed Alisson

Fair play, Mignolet was never good enough to replace him. But that was the mistake of Rodgers. Klopp came in and set things right with a world class keeper in Alisson after initially getting it wrong by signing Karius

I thought Mignolet had flashes where he played well. Always terrible with his feet though. I’m fairly certain he saved a pen in his 1st league appearance, which is nice. Karius was…..well……..not the right mentality for a prem GK

When Brendan Rogers is lauded, remember that it was his little man syndrome that seen like likes of Gerrard and Reina et al. leave the club. #LFC
