Liverpool fans have reacted negatively to recent footage of the 2005 European tie with Italian side Juventus.
Having qualified successfully for the quarter-final of the 2004/2005 Champions League, Liverpool hosted the Serie A side at Anfield in the first leg and it proved to be a good night for the English club.
Central defender Sami Hyypia opened the scoring after just ten minutes before a memorable goal from Luis Garcia enhanced Liverpool’s advantage. Juve would get themselves a crucial away goal through Fabio Cannavaro, but the second leg would end goalless, sealing the Reds’ passage to the semi-final stage.
Remembering the game via the club’s official Twitter account through footage of the goals, Liverpool fans chose not to follow suit – but instead make their feelings known over the club’s recent decision to furlough a number of non-playing staff.
Those staff which have been furloughed will now receive 80% of their wages through the government’s job retention scheme, but former players such as Jamie Carragher and Stan Collymore have criticised the decision.
The scheme which has become prominent during the recent COVID-19 outbreak was proposed for smaller businesses, but Liverpool are now taking advantage.
