Liverpool will be without Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum for their Club World Cup semi-final.
The Reds take on Mexican side Monterrey, knowing a win would give them the opportunity to become world club champions.
Wijnaldum suffered a muscle injury in the second half of their 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday and hasn’t recovered in time to be fit for the semi-final.
The Dutch midfielder is Jurgen Klopp’s only injury concern, as centre-back Virgil Van Dijk is available for selection in Qatar.
Liverpool go into the tournament looking to win their third trophy of the year, having already won the Champions League and Super Cup.
Losing Wijnaldum is a blow, with Brazilian Fabinho still out with a long-term injury as well and the two have played the majority of the club’s games this season as starting central midfielders. Indeed, the former Newcastle man has averaged the joint-most dribbles out of anyone in the squad outside of the front three (per WhoScored), so losing his attacking impetus from the middle of the park could prove to be a blow.
The Reds do have options in the middle of the park, with the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, James Milner, Xherdan Shaqiri and Adam Lallana all capable of playing alongside captain Jordan Henderson.
Here’s how some of their fans reacted to the injury news:
