Liverpool: Fans react to Joel Matip being named PFA Player of the Month

Joel Matip has been named as the PFA Premier League Player of the Month for September.

The Cameroonian defender was an ever-present for the Reds throughout the month, starting in all three of their matches and helping them beat Newcastle United, Chelsea and Sheffield United (via Transfermarkt).

He has been key in helping Liverpool maintain their 100% winning start to the season, although he did miss their latest fixture against Leicester City with an injury.

It has been some turnaround at Anfield for Matip, who at one point not so long ago was fourth choice centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren.

Indeed, at the start of the 2018/19 campaign the former Schalke man made just three league starts up until mid-January, before breaking into the side and partnering Van Dijk for the majority of the second half of the season.

Nowadays when fit he tends to start, he has played 90 minutes in six of the Reds’ eight Premier League matches so far this season and has been outstanding, as highlighted by the decision to give him the PFA Player of the Month award.

Naturally the Liverpool supporters are delighted for Matip, with most of them agreeing that he is a deserving winner. Here is how some reacted to the news on Twitter…
