Liverpool: Fans reflect on Jamie Carragher’s debut in 1997

Liverpool fans have paid tribute to club icon Jamie Carragher as Wednesday marked the anniversary of his debut for the Reds.

The 41-year-old made his first outing for Liverpool back in 1997 as an 18-year-old novice in the game and as an Academy graduate.

Under the watchful eye of former manager Gerard Houllier, Carragher came a critical asset as he racked up 20 first-team appearances in the 1997/98 campaign, and played a big part of helping the Merseyside capture the treble in 2001.

After winning the Champions League in 2005, the Bootle-born defender had cemented his place as a club legend, as the Frenchman’s successor Rafa Benitez saw him as a better-suited centre half.

He went on to make 737 appearances for Liverpool, scoring just five goals.

Supporters heaped praise on the legend and made their feelings clear about him on social media. One fan described him as an “absolute monster”, while another said that he was an “awesome servant” to the club.
