The England international started in the midfield alongside Naby Keita and James Milner as the Reds advanced to the Club World Cup final to face Brazilian side Monterrey on Saturday.

Substitute Roberto Firmino scored a 91st-minute winner to ensure that the Merseyside club advanced to the next stage of the intercontinental tournament.

Former Reds right-back Glen Johnson blamed the 31-year-old for his part in conceding the first-half equaliser to Monterrey’s Rogelio Funes Mori – the twin brother of former Everton star Ramiro.

Injuries had restricted Jurgen Klopp’s options for this game, with Virgil van Dijk dropping out due to illness and with Fabinho, Joel Matip and Georginio Wijnaldum injured.

Lallana struggled to assert his authority in the game despite having experienced players around him, with the increasing feeling that he may leave at the end of the season due to Takumi Minamino’s arrival from RB Salzburg.

Supporters were critical of the Englishman’s showing in the Middle East and made their feelings clear about it on social media. One fan said that he has been the worst player to play for the club in the past decade.
