Liverpool: Fans slam Joe Gomez ‘disaster’ performance against Man City

Manchester City made light work of battering the Premier League champions at the Etihad on Thursday.

Liverpool uncharacteristically slumped to defeat against last season’s title holders after subpar performances all round led to a humiliating 4-0 loss.

Pep Guardiola’s side were levels above the Reds, who struggled to make any sort of impact on their first match as champions. One man who was particularly disappointing was Virgil van Dijk’s protege Joe Gomez. The 23-year-old was hauled off the pitch at half-time and replaced with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after a disastrous 45 minutes.

Gomez brought down Raheem Sterling in the box to award City their first goal of the game after 25 minutes. To make matters worse, his England teammate got himself on the scoresheet ten minutes later by slotting the ball through Gomez’s legs to double the home side’s lead.

Loads of Liverpool fans are crucifying the defender’s ‘abysmal’ performance, with one branding him a ‘disaster waiting to happen’. According to Sofascore, Gomez won just one attempted duel and lost possession eight times, earning a very poor rating of 5.4.
