Liverpool: Fans unhappy with Jose Mourinho’s tactics in win over Tottenham

Liverpool are 16 points clear overnight in the Premier League after making it 20 wins out of 21 in the division this evening.

A first half Roberto Firmino goal was enough to see off Tottenham, whose manager Jose Mourinho was mocked by numerous Reds fans over what they perceived to be his overly cautious approach.

At one point during the first half, The Athletic’s James Pearce tweeted (via @JamesPearceLFC) that the Reds had 79% possession, even though they were the visitors to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The final figure, while not as comprehensive, still read convincingly in Liverpool’s favour, with Jurgen Klopp’s side having twice as much of the ball as Spurs (67% to 33%).

Mourinho is no stranger to setting up defensively against the Reds in the past. When his Chelsea side won 2-0 at Anfield in 2014, they did so despite having just 27% of the ball and 11 shots to Liverpool’s 26 (as per BBC). Three years later, Mourinho’s Manchester United earned a goalless draw at Anfield from 38% possession and six shots to the home side’s 19 (as per BBC).

After again seeing the Tottenham manager setting up largely to frustrate the Reds, these Liverpool fans on Twitter took aim at Mourinho:
