Liverpool: Fans unhappy with proposed switch to Nike

Liverpool could have a new kit manufacturer for next season as speculation grows over a lucrative new deal with Nike.

According to Forbes, the Champions League holders are close to agreeing a deal with the sportswear manufacturer that would begin from the 2020/21 season and be the richest in the Premier League, news that was relayed by @LFCTransferRoom on Twitter.

Forbes via This Is Anfield reported that the Reds’ current £45m a year kit deal with New Balance, who have produced their kit since 2015, will expire at the end of this season, with the club seeking to explore other options off the back of European success and a Premier League title challenge.

Liverpool are hoping that any prospective new kit deal will surpass the English record of £75m a year that Manchester United are currently earning from Adidas, as previously reported by ESPN.

If Nike were to take over as the Reds’ kit supplier from next season, it would be their first involvement with the Anfield club, who have previously had kits made by Umbro, Adidas (two spells), Reebok, Warrior and now New Balance, as noted by Goal.com.

Despite the potential for large income, these Liverpool fans on Twitter did not seem pleased at the prospect of the club’s kits being made by Nike:

Money is sound but the kits will be the same as every other Nike sponsored club. Might mean nothing to some but it’s always been something I was drawn to, especially as a kid, the kits. NB haven’t been bad, loved the new red they brought in, that will go once we’re with Nike.

Never liked Nike jerseys! They use the same template for most of the teams under their label! For me, NB has been the best so far! Our jerseys at the moment are absolutely unique and one of a kind! Hope Nike looks into this!
