Liverpool midfielder Fabinho may have hinted that he wishes to stay on Merseyside for the foreseeable future.
Fabinho keen on Anfield stay
The 27-year-old made the move to Anfield shortly after the 2018 Champions League final in a £43.7m move from AS Monaco (via Sky Sports).
The £54m-rated talent has gone on to become an essential part of Jurgen Klopp’s side, including scoring a memorable goal against Manchester City during their title-winning campaign last season, which was one of three that he has scored in 90 appearances for the club (TransferMarkt).
After helping the Reds win the Champions League in 2019, Fabinho took responsibility at centre-back for Liverpool to cover for the injured Virgil van Dijk, who ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Everton, only to pick up a hamstring strain himself.
Speaking to UOL (via Sport Witness), Fabinho said that he thoroughly enjoys playing alongside Van Dijk and Gomez and opened up about his future at the club, with three years still to run on his current deal.
“I have this [season] and two more years of contract,” he said. “I intend to fulfil these three years and soon see if there is a renewal or not, but my focus today is on Liverpool and I am very happy here.
“I am in a league that is very good to play, very competitive when you play here you do not want to leave.”
“Liverpool have grown a lot in recent years, we have a strong team that has everything to continue like this and what we are achieving with this group has entered history. We can do more and more and I want to be part of that.”
Huge boost for Klopp
While there has been plenty of bad news around injuries for Liverpool fans to digest, they will likely be excited by this news. Klopp has done magnificently by keeping hold of some of their key players over the past 12 months, with the likes of Neco Williams and Curtis Jones committing their futures on Merseyside.
Having a versatile player such as Fabinho in your team should be a tremendous boost, and he will be greatly missed after his latest injury.
As the wretched pandemic continues, time will tell what Liverpool decide to do with Fabinho, and they are in no rush to make a decision.
