Robinson favours White
The Reds are currently going through a defensive injury crisis after Virgil van Dijk suffered knee ligament damage while Joel Matip continues to struggle with fitness issues. On top of all that, Fabinho suffered a knock to his hamstring which will see him miss the next few weeks, with Joe Gomez the only established centre-back available for selection.
With this in mind, Liverpool have been linked with a number of defenders, including RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Napoli’s Kalidou Kouliably. White has also come up in conversation with Liverpool since the summer, as well as several other big-name Premier League hitters.
After his loan spell with Newport County in 2018, he was described by Michael Flynn as “tremendous” upon being crowned County’s player of the year (via South Wales Argus).
Speaking with Sky Sports (28/10, 10:05 am), Robinson named White as a player that Klopp should consider as he continues his search for a Van Dijk replacement.
“They have to do the business early on, i.e. the first day of the window and with a ready-made replacement”, the 41-year-old said.
“The problem they are going to come in that area is that everyone in world football now knows that Liverpool are struggling in that area. The price is all of a sudden escalated.
“You are looking at the likes of Ben White, who I watched closely at Leeds. He is an outstanding centre-half. His valuation at Brighton now if Liverpool come knocking is £15m-£20m more than it would have been.”
Ben White has impressed for Leeds
He has yet to receive a full England cap, which is questionable considering how much acclaim he attracted during his time at Leeds United last season, where he featured in all of their Championship games as they won promotion (TransferMarkt).
Klopp needs to take urgent action before his problems get worse and ideally get a contract for White signed and sealed before the transfer window opens. That being said, the German tactician has kept his cards close to his chest and more information will likely be garnered before or during the Christmas period.
In other news, Liverpool fans slam pundit’s view on underperforming Reds’ duo.
