RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann has sent a warning to his striker Timo Werner about the potential dangers of moving to Liverpool.
Werner scored the winning goal during Wednesday’s 1-0 win against Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and told Viasport of his pride about being linked with a possible transfer to Anfield. The Germany international is having a wonderful season and has scored 26 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions during the current campaign, as per TransferMarkt.
His return to form has naturally attracted plenty of interest and the 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Merseyside, putting his manager Nagelsmann slightly on edge. He told SportBild (via Sport Witness) that he has his reservations about Werner going to Liverpool and suggested that the Merseyside club might not be the best destination for him. “It is more difficult for Timo Werner to play in Liverpool than in Leipzig,” he said. “He won’t get the status he has here in the first few years. I tell him that too.”
Werner has 20 Bundesliga goals, with only Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski getting more during the current campaign with 23, as per Fotmob. This has got Nagelsmann’s guard up in a desperate attempt to keep hold of his star acquisition, which the Reds should be too concerned with. With Werner himself describing the club as the “best in the world“, there is no surprise that he came across as incredibly flattered when talking about the club. Having averaged 4.1 shots per game and 1.9 dribbles in the Bundesliga this season (according to Whoscored), he brings a positive way of playing, in line with some of the attacking football deployed by Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.
Whether Werner decides to take on board the advice of his head coach remains to be seen and it certainly provides another interesting spin on this long-winded saga.
