Liverpool have been one of the most talked-about clubs in the summer transfer window and rightly so, given their acquisitions so far.

The Premier League champions have been serious in their recruitment drive, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez joining the squad.

They’ve splashed a cool £284m and if reports are true, they’re not done yet.

The Alexander Isak saga between Newcastle United and Liverpool has dominated headlines this summer, and the Reds finally backed up their long-standing interest in the Swedish striker with a huge £110m bid last week.

The approach was immediately rejected, and with Isak returning to training this morning, it will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds when he meets with manager Eddie Howe later this week.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak suggests they are keen to strengthen their centre-forward position, despite the recent signing of Ekitike, which casts further doubt over Darwin Nunez’s future in the first team.

Over the weekend, it was reported that Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal are prioritising a move for the Uruguayan striker.

David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed on X:

“Al Hilal identify Darwin Nunez as priority target & stepping up efforts to sign Liverpool striker.”

“No bid yet but interest registered to #LFC + #Alhilal plans to push for 26yo accelerated internally. Uruguay int’l receptive to possibility.”

Should Liverpool sell Darwin Nunez?

There’s no denying that Nunez has struggled to justify his eye-watering £64m+ fee during his time at Anfield.

There have certainly been flashes of quality – from his iconic late brace at St James’ Park against Newcastle to his recent double against Brentford, which helped Liverpool pull clear of Arsenal in the title race.

However, the 26-year-old’s inconsistency has raised eyebrows, and his tendency to squander chances has left fans increasingly frustrated.

Particularly when he is playing alongside the likes of Mohamed Salah, who has been the dominant performer in the Liverpool forward line for many years.

Over 143 appearances for Liverpool, Nunez has scored 40 goals and registered 26 assists – averaging a goal contribution every 112 minutes, which is not a disastrous return by Premier League standards.

Even so, if the Reds are genuinely serious about pushing for Isak and can twist Newcastle’s arm in the coming weeks, selling Nunez could make sense.

It’s believed Liverpool are seeking £70m to part ways with their charismatic centre-forward, but whether Al Hilal will match that valuation or try to negotiate a lower fee remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure, Liverpool’s striker saga is far from over, and the next few days and weeks promise plenty more twists.
