Liverpool open surprise talks with representatives of wantaway Chelsea star

Having already wrapped up the Premier League title and with little left to play for this season, Liverpool are now shifting focus to the summer transfer window.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold having agreed to join Real Madrid at the end of the campaign, securing a new right-back has become the club’s top priority. And it appears they may already have their target in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Earlier this week, Sky Sports Germany reporters Florian Plettenberg and Jonas Gerhartz revealed that Liverpool are in “concrete talks” to sign Frimpong and are preparing to trigger his release clause, reportedly valued between £29 million and £34 million.

Shortly after their report, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano added that Frimpong “has already said yes” to Liverpool—suggesting fans can expect to see him at Anfield next season.

Described as “special” by Leverkusen boss and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, Frimpong has been one of Europe’s standout full-backs over the past two seasons. The Dutchman has contributed 19 goals and 24 assists during that span, including 12 assists this term, playing a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2023/24.

Liverpool also eyeing Nkunku

With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota, bolstering the attacking line is another key objective for Liverpool this summer.

According to a new report from French outlet Foot Mercato, the Reds are among several clubs interested in Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, who is reportedly seeking a move away from Stamford Bridge.

The France international joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2023 but has endured a difficult time in London. His debut season was marred by injuries, and in his second, he struggled for minutes under Enzo Maresca, who has preferred Nicolas Jackson to lead the line.

Nkunku is now widely expected to depart in the coming months. Foot Mercato claims Liverpool have added him to their shortlist and already opened talks with his representatives over a potential move to Anfield.

However, the Reds will face competition from Bayern Munich—who made a move for Nkunku in January—and Newcastle United, who may target him as a replacement if star striker Alexander Isak leaves St. James’ Park.

Despite his struggles at Chelsea, Nkunku’s talent is unquestionable. And with Arne Slot already revitalizing players like Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo, who’s to say he couldn’t do the same again? We certainly wouldn’t put it past him.
