The talented player was honoured in Liverpool’s first pre-season game against Preston North End over the weekend.
In terms of recruitment, there is still work to be done to add crucial squad depth, in line with their ambitions to retain the Premier League title and compete in the Champions League with greater ferocity next season.
It has been widely reported that Liverpool could potentially sell Darwin Núñez after a disappointing tenure on Merseyside, with both Napoli and AC Milan credited with interest in securing his services.
The sale of the Uruguayan striker would require a replacement to ensure the attacking threat is fully covered going into the new season.
This morning, The Athletic’s David Ornstein provided an insight into Liverpool’s next priority in the transfer market.
Writing on social media platform X, Ornstein claimed:
“Liverpool focus in market after early additions to other positions is top striker.
Wide roles filled + Darwin Núñez move expected progress again soon so #LFC priority now No9. Isak / Ekitike interest well documented & will be more options @TheAthleticFC.”
Will Liverpool sign a striker?
There is no doubt that Liverpool create an outstanding number of chances; in fact, the Merseyside giants topped the table for big chances created in the Premier League last season.
However, aside from Mohamed Salah’s contributions in the forward line (29), only Luis Díaz scored more than ten goals in the top flight.
Converting more of those big chances and improving the output from other positions will be imperative if Liverpool are to progress and conquer their strengthening competitors.
The Reds have been linked with several out-and-out strikers this summer, with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak a popular choice among fans.
However, following Ornstein’s comments this morning about Newcastle’s intention to keep the striker, it now appears increasingly unlikely that the dream signing of Isak will be possible.
Liverpool have also been linked with Hugo Ekitike, who has an £86m release clause, and, more recently, FC Porto centre-forward Samu Aghehowa, while RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško has also been touted as an option.
All things considered, it will be interesting to see which direction Liverpool decide to take over the coming weeks, and whether they can persuade a club to meet their expectations to offload Núñez in the process.
