The Daily Star Sunday certainly has our Liverpool contingent here in the Football Transfer Tavern crowding around the pool table and asking our landlord just what the gossip is and we are not surprised.
The Reds are in deep trouble this term after an excellent season last time out and it seems that Brendan Rodgers is not afraid to wield the axe when it comes to his underperforming players.
Simon Mignolet is certainly one who has felt the temperature drop a few degrees following his axe ahead of the crunch clash with Manchester United.
As our regulars note, Liverpool have been linked with a whole host of goalkeepers in the last few months and it seems that Rodgers still does not totally believe in his Belgian number one.
He spoke about the decision to axe the Belgian and claimed: “I felt we needed to change that area. Brad has been a very loyal number two and done very well when he has come in. I am sure he will do very well.
“It’s not a gamble. He is an experienced goalkeeper and been around a long time. In my first year, he had to play several games and he did very well. I felt now was the time to stick him in. We want to be aggressive in our game.”
Given the drubbing suffered at the hands of Manchester United earlier today, some of our punters may disagree with that statement but as our landlord points out, their entire team is not good enough at the minute.
