Liverpool and Tottenham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been left ruing their losses today after it was suggested that highly rated Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld will be joining Roma at the end of the season.
Jamie Sanderson Metro reports that the 24-year-old has decided to move to Serie A and the two clubs have agreed a fee to take him to Italy. Both Liverpool and Tottenham are looking at strengthening their defensive lines this summer and have held a long-term interest in signing the Belgian star.
Brendan Rodgers is seeking a replacement for retiring Reds legend Jamie Carragher and had outlined the Ajax ace as a possible solution to his problems while Andre Villas-Boas is keen to add bodies to his defence during a busy summer.
Alderweireld has been excellent for the Dutch side this season as they claimed their third consecutive Eredivise title but he looks almost certain to leave along with Siem de Jong and Christian Eriksen during a summer of upheaval in Amsterdam. However it looks like his destination of choice will be Italy, not England as punters in the Tavern had hoped.
