Liverpool’s surprise deal puts defender amongst league’s highest earners

Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were left scratching their heads yesterday after news emerged that the Reds had handed a fresh long-term deal to Dejan Lovren.

The Croatian defender has hardly set Anfield alight since making the move to Merseyside from Southampton and many have speculated he could find himself out of the first-team next term, as they expect Jurgen Klopp to sign a new central-defender to partner Joel Matip.

However, Lovren’s new deal secures his services until 2021 and a whopping £100k-a-week makes him the fifth-highest defensive earner in the Premier League, The Daily Mirror reports, with only John Terry, David Luiz, Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany earning more.

Lovren could find himself moving higher up that list as John Terry is set to leave Chelsea this summer, whilst our landlord speculates a wealth of changes at Manchester City could see Kompany and Otamendi offloaded.

It’s therefore pretty remarkable that Lovren sits on such high earnings, ahead of the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Laurent Koscielny- who many in the bar consider to be more superior defenders.

Is Lovren deserving of his new deal? Let us know in the comments below!
