It’s fair to say that our resident Manchester City fans here in the Transfer Tavern have broad views over what the club needs this transfer window.
After a fairly inconsistent first half of the season, our landlord believes Pep Guardiola will dip into the January market in order to revitalise his squad.
Many comments made in the Transfer Tavern, though, suggest that Pep needs to work out what he has and work out a way to gain consistent results out of them.
Though with oil rich owners with very low patience, that is potentially not an issue and the pressure will be on Guardiola to make the right signings in order to galvanise his squad for the second half of the season.
It is well known in the footballing world that Guardiola has a specific way to play football, so if his type of player becomes available in this month – we may well see him dipping into his pockets to make these signings a reality.
As usual, the Tavern talk has been very colourful and there are many names flying around with a lot of heated debates taking place. Here are two of the names our landlord pinpointed as vital signings in order for City to push for the title…
Aymeric Laporte
Though he rejected an offer to join Guardiola’s City revolution in the summer, Laporte has said he will “study any offers” coming his way in the near future.
With John Stones looking less then convincing after his move from Everton in the summer, City fans in the Transfer Tavern would love to see a new centre back arrive in this transfer window especially with the ambiguity around Vincent Kompany’s return.
Like Stones, Laporte is a ball playing defender and there is no doubt that the young Frenchman can fit in to Guardiola’s style of play.
Juan Bernat
The problem in City’s defence could well see Guardiola go back to former club Bayern in a bid for Juan Bernat.
The 23-year-old Spaniard was signed for Bayern by Guardiola and with Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov being less than convincing at left back this season, our resident City fans would welcome Bernat in order to shore up that side of the City defence.
With versatility being a main quality in all Guardiola’s playing style, Bernat fits right in as he can play anywhere down the left side and our landlord believes he will bring a bit of familiarity to the Citizen’s play as they look to push for the title.
