Man United eyeing surprise £2m raid on big Premier League rivals

Every so often, even the most ardent of punters in the Transfer Tavern will be left speechless by a bizarre tidbit emanating out of the press, despite their many years of experience when parked up at the bar.

Well, that’s exactly what’s happened again to both the Chelsea and Manchester United fans in this evening.

That’s because, according to the Sun, United could make a surprise move to bring Blues stalwart John Obi Mikel to Old Trafford as his trophy-laden time in west London winds down.

The Nigerian has not yet played under Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge and is out of contract at the end of the season, two things that could prompt Jose Mourinho into making a move.

He and the Super Eagles star have a long history together during the Portuguese’s time in SW6 and, interestingly, Mikel has technically signed for United before.

Back when he was 19, the Red Devils announced they had signed him from Lyn, though the now 29-year-old ultimately moved to Chelsea very soon after amid acrimonious circumstances.

It’s an odd story, one that further suggests a deal could cost around £2m, though Mikel has huge experience in the Premier League and could provide wonderful backup in United’s midfield department.

Could Mikel be a masterstroke signing for United? Let us know below…
