Manchester City: Fans draw up fresh VAR conspiracy regarding Dries Mertens goal

During Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at home to Napoli in the Champions League, some Manchester City supporters have drawn up a fresh VAR conspiracy.

VAR checked over Dries Mertens’ opening goal to check for any wrongdoing before ultimately giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Dejan Lovren eventually equalised for the hosts midway through the second half to hand Liverpool an advantage heading into their last group game away to Red Bull Salzburg – with the Austrian side needing a win to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Despite VAR checking for a potential foul on Virgil van Dijk in the build-up to the Serie A side’s goal at Anfield, the officials rightfully opted to award the visitors their opening strike on the 20-minute mark before Liverpool were able to claw back to draw in an eventful match.

City played the night before and managed the same result – a 1-1 draw at home to Shakhtar Donetsk – with Ilkay Gundogan’s opening goal cancelled out through Manor Solomon’s brilliant finish.

Here’s how City fans reacted to the VAR decision on social media:

City fans, do you think you have been harshly treated by VAR officials this season? Let us know below!
