Sterling, who put on a phenomenal display at home to Atalanta midweek, scoring a hat-trick inside 12 minutes, is being backed by swathes of City supporters casting their vote for him to win the award.
In comparison to Sterling, fellow nominees Paulo Dybala, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain and Kylian Mbappe all had brilliant outings during this round of Champions League fixtures.
Oxlade-Chamberlain scored a brace in Liverpool’s 4-1 away win to Genk, meanwhile Mbappe grabbed three in PSG’s rout of Club Brugge.
Dybala, who scored two inside three minutes to complete a swift Juventus comeback against Lokomotiv Moscow, is also a firm contender for the accolade.
However, in the case of the City man, as well as a hat-trick, he also assisted Sergio Aguero and won a penalty against the Serie A visitors which placed the Citizens firmly in control before Sterling himself put the win beyond doubt.
As a result, City fans everywhere have flocked to protest why the Englishman should be given the award:
Definitely sterling. A hattrick and 2 assists, he singlehandedly tore atalanta apart. Doesn’t get better than that.
