Manchester City’s 4-0 victory over Fulham started with a sending off and then a penalty which was scored by Ilkay Gundogan. The spot kick was tucked right into the bottom left corner, despite the goalkeeper picking the right way to dive.
He took over penalty duties from Gabriel Jesus, who missed one last week against Sheffield United and has missed three out his last five. For a striker of the quality of Sergio Aguero, he’s not got the best record either, having missed 12 of the 46 he’s taken in his career. With both strikers not being penalty specialists, Pep Guardiola noted the team needs to “reflect” on who should take them.
Gundogan managed to keep up the German trend of being great at penalties as he slotted home the ninth of his career and kept up his 100 per cent success rate. When the club’s official account posted the news that he’d scored, many fans tweeted to hail the decision to let him take it instead of Jesus.
8. GOAL! @IlkayGuendogan makes no mistake from the spot! Rolling it into the bottom corner! Lovely!
