Manchester City are reportedly keen on a move for Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer.

The Lowdown: Haaland incoming?

Pep Guardiola’s side have already been heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund talisman Erling Haaland in recent weeks, with the Citizens said to be ready to active his €75m (£63.3m) release clause in a bid to bring him to the Premier League.

The reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic claims personal terms are already agreed with Haaland, and the player has 'approved' the transfer.

However, it would now seem like he might not be the only new signing that could arrive at the Etihad come the end of the season, with the Manchester outfit said to be interested in a possible transfer for the 23-year-old Nunes.

The Latest: City ‘top of the list’

According to Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness), it’s claimed that City have ‘already been following’ Nunes and have become ‘even more attentive’ after seeing him in action for Sporting in the Champions League.

The source also states that the five-time Portugal international is ‘ready for the market’, with the current league leaders said to be at the ‘top of the list’ in the race for his signature, alongside Newcastle United.

It’s thought that the Lisbon-based side won’t let their talent leave for much less than €60m (£50.6m), but the club’s hierarchy are getting ‘prepared for his farewell’ in the upcoming transfer window.

The Verdict: Fernandinho replacement

City’s interest in Nunes comes as no shock, especially considering the recent news that fan favourite Fernandinho won’t be signing a new deal ahead of next season, so the Brazilian-born prospect could prove to be the perfect replacement.

The 6-foot playmaker has scored four goals and registered five assists in all competitions for Sporting this campaign, as per Transfermarkt, displaying the threat that he can have at the top end of the pitch, but also boasts a tenacious 1.3 tackles per game in domestic action and two tackles per game in Europe (Whoscored).

Guardiola has also openly been full of admiration for Nunes, admitting that he thinks he is “one of the best” players in the world right now, and so it would be no surprise to see him in a sky blue shirt at some point over the coming months.
