Manchester United have submitted an opening bid of £55m for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. Sky Sports has reported that the bid consists of a guaranteed £45m plus £10m in bonuses but is expected to be rejected as Brentford hold out for more than £60m.

Discussions between the two clubs are ongoing, and Brentford is believed to be willing to listen to offers for the player. Mbeumo has enjoyed his most fruitful campaign this season, scoring 20 Premier League goals and providing 7 assists.

Links to several Premier League clubs including Newcastle and Liverpool began to surface but United last week were encouraged by the news that Mbeumo has chosen Old Trafford. Brentford are understood to be open to granting the player’s wishes, with manager Thomas Frank admitting earlier this season that the Bees are a “selling club.”

United last week held talks with the player presumably in preparation for this week’s discussions with Brentford. United have admired the Cameroon international for a while, and the player is seen as a good fit for Ruben Amorim’s system.

United closing in on Mbeumo

Mbeumo represents good value in today’s market. The 25 year old has scored 70 goals in 242 appearances for Brentford since arriving from Troyes in 2019. He has one year remaining on his current deal with an option to extend for a further year.

He is rumoured to be seeking compensation that quadruples his current £45k per week salary which is believed to be manageable for United.

This kind of productivity usually costs considerably more in both transfer value and wages, and United will be relishing the chance to snap up a top talent. The player’s preference to join the club despite the lack of European football next season puts them in a strong position.

Amorim is believed to be in search of versatile players this summer, and Mbeumo ticks that box as he can play anywhere across a front three. He formed a devastating partnership with Yoane Wissa last season, roaming freely from his right wing starting position and finding space centrally to combine with his striker partner.

Naturally left footed but strong with both feet, Mbeumo is dangerous when cutting inside. He is likely to occupy one of the more advanced roles in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Mbuemo could become the second versatile summer signing for United this summer, with the club having already secured the signature of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million.
