Manchester United boss Ferguson retires – so what now?

fergie.jpgThe Football Transfer Tavern has been rocked with news of Sir Alex Ferguson’s impending retirement. After 27 years the legendary United manager has decided the time is right to call it a day and will move into a director position from next season.

United fans sat around the bar cannot come to envisage a world without Ferguson but from next season that will be the case. Everton boss David Moyes and long-term front runner for the job Jose Mourinho are the two favourites and who United decide to replace the 71-year-old with could have implications across the Premier League.

United were fully expected to have another busy summer in the transfer market after already recruiting Crystal Palace starlet Wilfried Zaha. However with a new manager at the helm could their transfer targets now change? If Mourinho arrives in a wave of publicity he could attempt to sign Tottenham ace Gareth Bale as he has persistently while at Madrid and possible moves for other Real Madrid stars could be on the cards. Cristiano Ronaldo to make a sensationsal Old Trafford return perhaps?

Today’s shock news could change the entire perception of the Premier League and a lot of United fans are waking into an unknown world. The legacy of Ferguson will remain but may this prove a heavy burden on the new boss. Could the end of Ferguson at Old Trafford see the final chapter written in United’s dominance of English football? We shall find out soon enough.
