Chelsea and Manchester United are weighing up the possibility of sending Christopher Nkunku and Alejandro Garnacho in opposite directions this summer according to the Telegraph. Both forwards have come under fire this season for different reasons and want to leave their respective clubs.

Both clubs have held interest in signing the opposite player, and although no discussions have taken place the possibility of a swap has not been ruled out. The Telegraph reports that alternatively two separate transfers involving Nkunku and Garnacho could solve any issues over transfer values and wages.

Both players find themselves in search of a new club, with Garnacho told by manager Ruben Amorim he has no future at United. This follows the player’s public criticism of United’s season and of his limited playing time in the Europa League final loss to Tottenham in May.

Garnacho seemingly signaled his intent to leave the club once more, when he posted a picture to social media of himself wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford’s name on the back. His temperament has been called into question.

Garnacho and Nkunku could be headed in opposite directions

Garnacho has been on Chelsea’s radar since January, when the Blues explored a deal for the winger. United reportedly value Garnacho at around £60 million, and Chelsea ultimately decided to wait until the summer.

Chelsea are now nearing a deal for Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens but retain an interest in signing Garnacho as well. United’s interest in Nkunku also began in January when Chelsea approached for Garnacho.

United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell was previously the technical director at Chelsea and RB Leipzig – the club Nkunku moved to Chelsea from in June 2023 for £52 million.

Nkunku has endured a torrid two seasons with Chelsea, with injuries derailing much of his debut season. He has failed to impress when fit as well, getting a run in the side when first choice striker Nicolas Jackson suffered an injury of his own.

A series of high profile misses and underwhelming performances have seen him come under fire from Blues faithful and it seems his future lies away from Stamford Bridge. The France international still managed 14 goals last season, mostly in cup competitions, and is not short of suitors.

Amorim is prioritizing his forward line this summer and could offer Nkunku a fresh start at Old Trafford. United suffered their worst season in front of goal in Premier League history having netted just 44 times in 38 games.

First choice strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee managed a joint goal return of just seven goals. United have already moved to address these concerns, securing the signing of star Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

United also remain locked in negotiations with Brentford for star winger Bryan Mbeumo.
