Manchester United remain confident in tying goalkeeper David de Gea down to a new deal, but do have two replacements in mind should the Spain international depart the club next summer, according to the Athletic via Caught Offside.
De Gea, who has been at United since moving from Atletico Madrid in 2012, has just under a year left to run on his current contract at Old Trafford. The 28-year-old would leave the club on a free next summer if his current employers fail to get him signed to a new deal.
Despite a drop in performance last season – which saw the Spaniard keep just seven clean sheets in the Premier League, eleven less than the season before (via Transfermarkt) – De Gea is still regarded a fan favourite at United with the majority of the club’s supporters.
United do have some replacements in mind should they fail to tie De Gea down to a new contract, though. It is understood, per the Athletic’s report (via Caught Offside) that the Red Devils are keeping tabs on two ‘keepers , with one of them being Atletico Madrid’s current No.1, Jan Oblak.
Oblak is an experienced goalkeeper who is deemed as one of – if not the – best in the business, as noted by FourFourTwo. He has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past, though a move never came to fruition due to De Gea remaining at the north west club.
Tying De Gea down to a new long-term deal definitely seems the best scenario for United. Despite a slight drop in performance last term, he is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world and knows the club inside out having won the club’s Player of the Year award three times over the past few season; losing him for nothing next summer should be seen as a huge waste.
