Manchester United: Fans agree with Gareth Southgate’s comments on Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford started this season emphatically, scoring twice against Chelsea in an impressive 4-0 win for Manchester United in early-August.

With no Romelu Lukaku, the England international has been entrusted to lead the line for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new-look Red Devils side this term, but despite that opening day performance against the Blues, he is yet to find the back of the net and missed a penalty against Crystal Palace, per Transfermarkt.

Solskjaer is reportedly growing frustrated at his lack of cutting edge in front of goal, while his international manager, Gareth Southgate, believes that the 22-year-old is better out wide than he is playing through the middle, something highlighted by the Independent.

“A lot of his development at United was as a ‘wide raider’ and I think he isn’t as strong as Harry with his back to goal and holding play up, so if he plays as a nine, he will play it differently to Harry, but a lot of his best work is in that inside-left channel coming in off the line,” said the Three Lions boss.

“I don’t think that’s a problem, we just have to be aware that that’s probably his profile to get the best out of him, they’re the areas on the pitch that he needs to get in,” he added.

Southgate is clearly not alone in thinking this, either, with many United fans on Twitter quick to agree with the 49-year-old:
